It is very important to maintain healthy gums so you don’t get gum disease. Gum disease happens when you develop plaque that builds up underneath your gum line. Plaque contains bacteria which can cause your gums to become infected leading to gum disease and tooth decay. If you are noticing that your gums are becoming inflamed, red, tender, bleeding or swollen you may be at risk for gum disease. The good news is that gum disease can be reversible if you follow these 5 steps to maintain healthy gums.

    1. Brush & floss.
Flossing is very important to do at least once a day and brushing at least twice a day. People tend to forget about flossing and then the plaque that is missed from brushing can get into your gum line and start the process of gum disease. You can floss in the morning, in the day, at night it doesn’t matter just make sure you are doing it at least once a day.

    2. Regular check ups and cleanings.
Going to your dentist every six months for your dental check ups and cleanings are extremely important. Our dentist and hygienists can spot early detection’s of gum disease and can treat it before it becomes more serious. A professional cleaning from one of our excellent hygienists is the only way you are going to remove tartar from deep underneath your gum line.

    3. Stop smoking.
There are many reasons to quit smoking and now there’s another one, gum disease. When you smoke it weakens your immune system which makes it harder for you to fight off gum disease. Also smoking slows down your healing process so if your gums do become infected it will take a lot longer for your gums to heal.

    4. Fluoride toothpaste.
Using toothpaste with fluoride can help reduce gum disease. When you are buying your toothpaste make sure that there is an ADA seal on it because then you know it’s approved by the American Dental Association.

    5. Therapeutic mouthwash.
A therapeutic mouthwash helps reduce plaque buildup and can prevent or reduce any chance of gingivitis. These mouthwashes are typically available over the counter and will help you prevent gum disease by keeping your oral hygiene healthy.

By doing these 5 steps regularly to maintain healthy gums you will prevent any chance of gum disease and keep your smile as healthy as it could be. Give us a call at 215-568-6222 to schedule your routine dental cleaning with the best hygienists in Philadelphia!

Most people don’t realize that there is a link between high blood pressure and your oral health. Did you know that roughly 1 in 3 American adults have high blood pressure? That’s 75 million people putting themselves at a greater risk of heart attacks and or strokes. If you’re confused on what is causing your high blood pressure, take a look in your mouth and see if there is any tooth decay or if your gums are sore, receding, or even bleeding. This could be the cause. Your mouth is a perfect breeding ground for harmful bacteria. If you have gum disease there’s an increased risk for the harmful bacteria to get into your bloodstream through your infected gums. Researchers believe that this can lead to high blood pressure because of the plaque buildup in your arteries. This doesn’t necessary mean that gum disease will cause high blood pressure this just means that it can be a risk factor for high blood pressure.
How to prevent gum disease? It is important for you to brush for at least two minutes a day, two times a day and preferably while using an electric toothbrush. If you’re a patient of ours at your next appointment ask us how you can win a Quip electric toothbrush!

After you brush your teeth the second time make sure you floss as well. Flossing is just as important as brushing your teeth because you miss all the tiny particles that get stuck in between your teeth which can cause plaque buildup. Finally, make sure to visit your dentist for routine cleanings and check-ups to catch any oral health problems early and to maintain healthy teeth and gums for life.

April showers bring May flowers. While it’s raining this month it’s the perfect time to come visit Philly Dentistry and get ready for the Summer months ahead. April is Oral Cancer Awareness month and the public awareness in the United States is low when it comes to the subject. Every day 132 new people are diagnosed with oral cancer. It’s important to have your dentist give you a screening for oral cancer so that they can catch any early signs. Drinking alcohol and smoking tobacco are still the main cause of oral cancer, but doctors now suggest that the HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) which is spread through oral sex could surpass drinking alcohol and smoking tobacco as the main risk for mouth cancer. At Philly Dentistry during your exam and cleaning we will give you a free oral cancer screening to make sure there are no harmful signs of anything.

Early signs of oral cancer can vary depending on how long the symptoms last. If you are experiencing any of the following signs for longer than 2 weeks you should visit a doctor.

    • Hard time swallowing or chewing.
    • Any lumps or soreness in the mouth area, throat or lips.
    • Red or white patch in the mouth.
    • Hard time moving your jaw or tongue.
    • Unexpected weight loss.
    • An ulcer that does not heal or continues to bleed.
    • Soreness, pain or lumps anywhere in the mouth or lips.

During the whole month of April take full advantage of our monthly special of $500 off your Invisalign treatment along with free teeth whitening custom bleach trays! Invisalign is the best way to straighten your teeth without the hassle of those old fashion metal braces. Invisalign has clear aligners that align your teeth perfectly straight so you have a healthy bite and a beautiful smile. Here’s what our patients had to say about their Invisalign experience with our office.

“If you are thinking about getting Invisalign then get it at Philadelphia Dentistry. These folks are awesome. Super friendly, professional, and the results were amazing. I highly recommend them. Don’t even think about going to look anywhere else. Just do it. YOU will not be disappointed.” –Jeff S.

“This entire practice is phenomenal, from the front desk staff, to the hygienists. If you would’ve told me five years ago that I’d be ENJOYING coming to the dentist, I would think you were crazy! But this whole practice, Eva, Malikah, Dani are the most caring, gentle, and knowledgeable people in the industry. I trust them implicitly and have never been happier with my smile and the health of my teeth. After several years as a dental patient here, I finally took the plunge and began Invisalign. I was afraid it would hurt, that it would be a pain in the neck socially, and that it would be unaffordable. Now that I’ve finished Invisilign I can say NONE of those things were an issue! A 3/10 in discomfort at most, socially was NBD at all, and with CareCredit I’m easily able to pay it off monthly.” –Robyn B.

“I love love love this place. They are so welcoming and warm. They made me feel comfortable about getting Invisalign. The process was easy. I would recommend them any day.” –Rashida S.

“I have been going here for about 10 years. I have always been very, very happy with the service, friendliness and expertise. I’m finishing up my Invisalign, and things have gone extremely well with it.” Lynn R.

Is there an age limit on getting healthy straight teeth? A very common question our patients ask our staff is, “am I too old for Invisalign?” Some patients even said they never thought to bring Invisalign up at their appointment because they assumed they were too old to get it. If you never had braces when you were younger and now you think it may be too late to get them, have no fear! If you have healthy teeth there is NO age limit on getting Invisalign.

In fact, getting Invisalign to straighten your teeth benefits anyone at any age. Straight teeth are healthy teeth and healthy teeth never go out of style. Being in your 40s, 50s, and even 60s and wanting braces doesn’t seem very appealing to anyone, but with Invisalign your clear aligner trays are practically invisible. You can have the smile you’ve always dreamed of with Invisalign!

The Invisalign process starts with one of our great providers giving you an Invisalign scan with the iTero scanner. This scan will show you what your teeth will look like after Invisalign, before you even start your procedure. By having this scanner in our office, we can start your treatment sooner than any dental office in Philadelphia.

Invisalign is affordable for all ages. It’s an investment in your smile, confidence, health and happiness.
